Lineal consanguinity refers to a blood relationship between individuals where one person is a direct ancestor or a direct descendant of the other.

In simpler terms, it describes the connection between people who are in a straight line of descent, either going upwards (like a child to a parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent) or downwards (like a parent to a child, grandchild, or great-grandchild). This relationship does not involve any branching off to siblings, aunts, uncles, or cousins.

• Example 1: Inheritance Law

  Imagine a state's inheritance laws dictate that if a person dies without a will, their estate will first pass to their lineal consanguinity. This means the assets would go directly to their children, and if no children are alive, then to their grandchildren, and so on down the direct family line. A sibling, aunt, or cousin would not be considered a lineal heir in this context because they are not a direct ancestor or descendant.

  When someone is tracing their family tree and specifically wants to identify their direct ancestors, they are looking for individuals connected by lineal consanguinity. They would be researching their parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and so forth, in a straight ascending line. Similarly, if they were looking for their direct descendants, they would trace their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
