Load factor refers to a measure of efficiency that compares the actual usage or occupancy of a system or service against its maximum potential capacity over a specific period. It helps to determine how effectively resources are being utilized.

• Example 1: Electricity Usage in a Manufacturing Facility

  Imagine a large manufacturing plant that uses a significant amount of electricity. The plant's load factor would compare the total amount of electricity it actually consumed over a month to the maximum amount of electricity it could have drawn from the grid at any single point during that month (its peak demand). If the plant operates consistently throughout the day and night, its load factor would be high, indicating efficient and steady use of its electrical supply. A low load factor would suggest periods of very high demand followed by long periods of low usage, which can sometimes lead to higher costs from the utility provider.

  Consider a commuter train service operating during peak morning hours. The load factor for a specific train car would be calculated by comparing the actual number of passengers on board to the total seating and standing capacity of that car. If the train car is consistently packed with passengers, its load factor is high, indicating that the service is heavily utilized and effectively moving many people.
