A lower scale is a range of wage rates for a particular type of job. It is also a fee charged by a solicitor for a specific type of case in the English Supreme Court of Judicature. The lower scale applies to causes and matters assigned by the Judicature Acts to the King's Bench, Probate, Divorce, and Admiralty divisions, actions for debt, contract, or tort, and almost all causes and matters assigned by the acts to the Chancery division where the amount in controversy is less than £1,000. The higher scale applies in all other cases and in actions falling under one of the lower-scale classes if the principal relief sought was injunctive. A scale can also refer to an instrument used for weighing.
