Municeps (Roman Law)

In Roman law, a municeps referred to:

• A citizen residing in a municipium, which was a self-governing town or city within the Roman Empire that possessed its own local administration and often had its inhabitants granted Roman citizenship.
• More specifically, a member of the local governing council or senate of such a municipium.

The plural form is municipes.

• Example 1: Consider Lucius, a merchant living in the Roman town of Ostia. As Ostia was a municipium, Lucius, by virtue of his residence and Roman citizenship, would be considered a municeps.
