Nautae, Caupones, Stabularii: These were people in ancient Rome who were responsible for carrying goods by sea, running inns, and taking care of horses. If someone entrusted them with their goods or animals and they were damaged or lost, these people were held responsible and had to pay for the damages. They were also responsible for the actions of their employees and could be held liable for any harm caused by them. This rule was so important that it was even adopted into the law of Scotland.
