Nonuser refers to the situation where someone possesses a legal right or privilege but fails to exercise or utilize it over a period of time. This lack of use can, in certain circumstances, lead to the forfeiture or loss of that right.

• Imagine a property owner, Ms. Chen, who has an easement – a legal right to use a specific path across her neighbor Mr. Davies's land to access a public road. For twenty years, Ms. Chen consistently uses a different route and never once walks or drives across Mr. Davies's property. If Mr. Davies can demonstrate this prolonged nonuser, he might be able to legally terminate Ms. Chen's easement, preventing her from ever using that path in the future.

• Consider a small town that grants a local bus company an exclusive franchise to operate public transportation routes within its limits. The agreement stipulates that the company must provide service to all designated areas. However, the bus company decides it's not profitable to serve the town's less populated northern district and never runs buses there for several years. The town council could argue that the company's nonuser of its exclusive right in that specific area constitutes a breach of the franchise agreement, potentially allowing the town to open that route to another bus service or revoke the exclusivity.

• Suppose a family owns mineral rights beneath a piece of land, giving them the right to extract oil, gas, or other resources. For fifty years, they never conduct any geological surveys, drilling, or extraction activities, nor do they lease these rights to anyone else. In some jurisdictions, such prolonged nonuser of mineral rights, especially if combined with other factors like abandonment, could lead to the rights reverting to the surface landowner or being deemed forfeited, particularly if there are specific state laws designed to encourage resource development.
