Political offense

A political offense refers to a crime that is specifically aimed at challenging, undermining, or overthrowing the authority, security, or fundamental structure of a government or state. Unlike ordinary crimes motivated by personal gain or malice, a political offense is driven by political objectives, such as changing government policy, leadership, or the entire political system.

A significant aspect of international law concerning political offenses is that individuals accused of such crimes generally cannot be extradited (sent back) to the country where the offense occurred. This principle is often applied when the requesting country's justice system is perceived as politically motivated or when the individual's actions are seen as legitimate resistance against an oppressive regime.

• Disrupting a National Election: Imagine a group of activists in Country X, deeply opposed to the current government's environmental policies, orchestrates a sophisticated cyberattack on the national election commission's website on voting day. Their goal is not personal profit, but to disrupt the election, sow distrust in the government, and force a policy change.
