A select committee is a type of committee that is established for a specific purpose or a limited time. It is a subordinate group to which a deliberative assembly or other organization refers business for consideration, investigation, oversight, or action. A legislature will ordinarily establish a select committee for a non-legislative purpose, such as writing memorials, procuring chaplains, determining the qualifications of members, and settling election disputes.
