Shaken-Baby Syndrome refers to a severe medical condition resulting from the forceful shaking of an infant or young child. This violent action causes the child's head to move rapidly back and forth, leading to significant and often catastrophic brain injury. The brain, which is soft and delicate, impacts the inside of the skull, causing bruising, swelling, and bleeding. This trauma can also damage blood vessels and nerves within the brain and eyes.

A critical characteristic of shaken-baby syndrome is that the injuries are often internal, such as bleeding around the brain (subdural or subarachnoid hemorrhage) and bleeding in the retina of the eyes (retinal hemorrhage), with little to no visible external signs of trauma on the child's head or body. The consequences can be devastating, including permanent brain damage, developmental delays, blindness, seizures, or even death.
