An entity or authority is considered supranational when it operates above or beyond the individual political control and sovereignty of national governments. This means that member states or participating countries agree to delegate certain powers or abide by decisions made by the supranational body, even if those decisions might conflict with purely national interests or laws.

• Example 1: The European Union (EU)

  The European Union is a prime example of a supranational organization. Member countries, such as Italy or Sweden, agree to abide by common EU laws and regulations concerning areas like environmental protection, competition policy, and consumer rights. The European Court of Justice, an EU institution, can issue rulings that are binding on national courts and governments, demonstrating that the EU's authority transcends the individual legal systems of its member states in these specific domains.

• Example 2: The International Criminal Court (ICC)

  The International Criminal Court has the authority to prosecute individuals for grave international crimes like genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, regardless of their nationality or the willingness of their home country to prosecute. For instance, if a leader from a country that has ratified the Rome Statute (the treaty establishing the ICC) is accused of committing war crimes, the ICC can investigate and bring charges against them, even if their national government would prefer to handle the matter domestically or ignore it.
