Term: vassallo et quibus dederit
Definition: Vassallo et quibus dederit is a Latin phrase that was used in feudal grants. It means that the vassal (a person who held land from a lord in return for loyalty and military service) could give the land to someone else, and that person would also become a vassal. This was important because sometimes the vassal needed to sell or transfer the land to someone else. Before the 18th century, there was a difference between a grant that said "and his heirs and assignees whomsoever" and one that said "et quibus dederit." The latter meant that the lord had given permission for the vassal to transfer the land to someone else. Later, a law was passed that allowed either the vassal's heir or the person they sold the land to (called a disponee) to become the new vassal without the lord's permission.
