Simple English definitions for legal terms

vocabula artis

Read a random definition: beneficium separationis

A quick definition of vocabula artis:

Vocabula artis refers to words that have a specific meaning in a particular field, different from their general meaning. For example, in law, words like "and his heirs" and "res ipsa loquitur" have a specific meaning. It is also used to describe jargonistic words or phrases.

A more thorough explanation:

Vocabula artis (pronounced voh-kab-yuh-luh ahr-tis) is a Latin term that means "words of art." It refers to words or phrases that have a specific meaning in a particular field or specialty, different from their general meaning in everyday language.

  • And his heirs: In law, this phrase is a term of art that is commonly used in wills and other legal documents to indicate that a person's property will be passed down to their heirs after they die.
  • Res ipsa loquitur: Another legal term of art, this Latin phrase means "the thing speaks for itself." It is used to describe situations where the facts of a case are so obvious that negligence or fault can be inferred without further evidence.

These examples illustrate how vocabula artis can be used in law to create precise and specific language that has a particular meaning within the legal field. These terms are not commonly used in everyday language, but they are essential for lawyers and legal professionals to communicate effectively and accurately.

It's more just not a good # for people who aren't willing to clerk conservative. I'm sure they place liberal clerks at an above average rate for a t-6 though. Maybe higher (not entirely sure)
