• More broadly, it describes something that is orthodox, standard, or generally accepted as fundamental or authoritative within a particular field or discipline. It represents what is considered the official, traditional, or most authentic version or approach.

Examples:

• A new set of regulations issued by a religious denomination regarding the eligibility requirements for ordination into the clergy would be considered canonical. This means the regulations are consistent with and derived from the established religious laws and doctrines of that particular church, ensuring they align with its foundational principles and traditions.

• In the field of computer science, when discussing the most efficient and widely accepted method to sort a list of data, a programmer might refer to a particular algorithm as the canonical approach. This indicates that it is the standard, most authoritative, and generally agreed-upon best practice for that specific task within the programming community, often taught in textbooks and used in industry.

• When an art history professor designs a course on Renaissance painting, they will likely include works by artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, referring to them as the canonical figures of the period. This signifies that these artists and their creations are universally recognized as the most important, influential, and foundational examples that define the artistic style and achievements of the Renaissance era.
