A composite mark is a type of trademark that consists of a combination of words, symbols, or designs that form a distinctive whole. Even if the individual elements of the mark are ordinary, the combination creates a unique identifier for a product or service. Advertising slogans are often examples of composite marks.
For example, the Nike "swoosh" logo and the "Just Do It" slogan are both part of Nike's composite mark. The combination of the two elements creates a distinctive identifier for Nike's products.
When registering a composite mark, the registrant must disclaim ownership in any unregistrable parts of the mark. This means that if a part of the mark is not eligible for trademark protection, the registrant cannot claim ownership of that part.
