"Custody of the law" describes a situation where a person or a piece of property is officially under the direct control, supervision, and protection of a legal authority. This authority could be a court, a law enforcement agency, or another government body, and the control is typically established through a legal process or order. When something is in the custody of the law, it means its disposition or access is restricted and governed by legal proceedings.

Examples:

• Example 1: A valuable antique painting is seized by federal agents during an investigation into art theft. The painting is then stored in a secure government facility while the case proceeds.
  Explanation: In this scenario, the painting is in the custody of the law. Even though it was stolen, its possession is no longer with the thieves or its original owner; it is under the control of the federal government, acting on behalf of the legal system, until its rightful ownership can be determined and the legal process concluded.
