Effluxion of time refers to the natural conclusion or expiration of an agreement, contract, or legal term simply because the predetermined period has passed. It signifies that an arrangement ends automatically at a specified date or after a defined duration, without any party needing to take a specific action to terminate it, or because of a breach of terms or another triggering event.

Here are some examples to illustrate this concept:

• Residential Lease Agreement: Imagine a tenant signs a lease for an apartment that clearly states the tenancy will last for one year, from January 1st to December 31st. On December 31st, the lease automatically ends. This conclusion is an example of effluxion of time because the agreement expires solely due to the passage of the agreed-upon twelve-month period, not because the landlord evicted the tenant, the tenant decided to move out early, or either party committed a breach of contract.

• Fixed-Term Employment Contract: A company hires a project manager for a specific, non-renewable six-month contract to oversee the implementation of a new IT system. Once the six months have elapsed, the employment contract concludes automatically. The project manager's employment ends because the agreed-upon duration has run its course, demonstrating effluxion of time, rather than due to performance issues, a decision to resign, or a company layoff.

• Software License Agreement: A small business purchases a license to use a particular accounting software, and the terms specify that the license is valid for a period of two years. After exactly two years from the date of purchase, the software license expires. The business can no longer use the software under that license unless they purchase a renewal. This expiration occurs by effluxion of time because it is solely the result of the two-year period having passed, not because the business violated the license terms or the software company decided to revoke it prematurely.
