Legal Definitions - electee

An electee refers to an individual who has been formally selected for a position, often through an election, but has not yet officially taken on the responsibilities of that role. In certain legal contexts, it can also describe a person who has been legally granted the right to make a specific choice concerning their status, rights, or entitlements.

• Newly Elected Public Official: After a hotly contested election for a state governorship, a candidate is declared the winner. Before the inauguration ceremony where they officially take the oath of office and assume their duties, that individual is considered the governor-elect, or an electee. They have been chosen by the voters but have not yet formally begun their term.

• Appointed Corporate Director: A technology company's existing board of directors votes to appoint a new independent director to fill a vacancy. Once the vote is cast and the individual is selected, but before they attend their first board meeting, complete onboarding paperwork, or formally sign any agreements to serve, they are an electee. They have been chosen by the existing board but have not yet fully integrated into their role.

• Beneficiary with a Legal Option: In a complex estate plan, a will might specify that a particular beneficiary has the legal option to either inherit a specific antique collection or receive a cash payout of equivalent value. Until the beneficiary formally communicates their decision to the estate executor, they are an electee in the sense that the law (through the will) grants them the power to make this significant choice regarding their inheritance.
