Simple English definitions for legal terms

firsthand knowledge

Read a random definition: Emergency Court of Appeals

A quick definition of firsthand knowledge:

Term: FIRSTHAND KNOWLEDGE

Definition: Firsthand knowledge is when someone knows something because they have seen it or experienced it themselves. It is different from knowing something because someone else told them about it. For example, if someone saw a bird flying in the sky, they have firsthand knowledge of the bird. This type of knowledge is important in court cases and when giving testimony because it is more reliable than secondhand information.

A more thorough explanation:

Firsthand knowledge is a type of personal knowledge gained through direct observation or experience. It is different from knowledge based on what someone else has said or written.

  • A witness who saw a car accident has firsthand knowledge of what happened.
  • A scientist who conducts experiments and collects data has firsthand knowledge of the results.
  • A person who has traveled to a foreign country has firsthand knowledge of the culture and customs there.

These examples illustrate how firsthand knowledge is gained through personal experience or observation, rather than through secondhand sources like books or hearsay.

I mean, if you are at like 167 then the school might just say, close enough to 170 for us. +2. This is based off of what UCLA told me when I went there.

I am sure if you are applying to like Yale also, they are going to do things like oh, we can get a service member in the 170's easily. No bonus for under 170. Shit out of luck.
@Dkk: Ok, yeah if UCLA said that then that's fair. I just am not sure how universal it is. I think softs are very hard to quantify apart from the truly rare ones and for the vast majority of softs it probably depends on how you portray/how it fits in with your broader narrative.

People seem hopeful for a UC wave tomorrow, but I don’t know if that’s optimism or if they talked to someone in the office
