The term indulto has two primary meanings, one referring to an act of clemency and another, historical meaning related to trade duties.

• 1. Pardon or Amnesty

  In its most common modern legal sense, an indulto refers to an official act of clemency or forgiveness, typically issued by a head of state or sovereign authority. It functions as a pardon or amnesty, effectively nullifying or reducing the legal consequences of a crime, often restoring certain rights or ending a sentence.

  • Example 1: Individual Clemency

    After a thorough review of a case, the President of a country might issue an indulto to a specific individual who was convicted of a non-violent drug offense many years ago. This act of clemency could lead to their immediate release from prison and the restoration of their civil rights, such as the right to vote or hold certain jobs, acknowledging that their sentence was disproportionate or that they have been fully rehabilitated.

  • Example 2: Political Amnesty

    In the aftermath of a period of political unrest, a newly formed government might declare an indulto for a large group of individuals who were imprisoned for participating in protests or expressing dissenting opinions.
