Simple English definitions for legal terms

obligatory

Read a random definition: reasonable diligence

A quick definition of obligatory:

Term: OBLIGATORY

Definition: Obligatory means something that you have to do because it is required by law or because it is the right thing to do. For example, if you promise to do something, it is obligatory for you to keep that promise. It can also mean something that is mandatory or required, like attending school or wearing a seatbelt in a car. When something is obligatory, it creates an obligation or a duty that must be fulfilled.

A more thorough explanation:

Definition: Obligatory (pronounced uh-blig-uh-tawr-ee) is an adjective that means something is legally or morally binding. It can also mean that something is required or mandatory.

Examples:

  • It is obligatory for citizens to pay their taxes.
  • Attendance at the meeting is obligatory for all employees.
  • The contract includes an obligatory clause that requires the parties to settle disputes through arbitration.

The first example illustrates the legal aspect of the definition, as citizens are legally required to pay their taxes. The second example shows how something can be mandatory, as attendance at the meeting is required. The third example demonstrates how an obligation can be created through a written agreement.

@mastermonkey45: Looking at some of the recent decisions in relation to when they went complete, I'd say it's a good sign. It seems many declines were sent within about 5-6 weeks of completion. Given those were applications that were SENT in January, I'd say that means you're still solidly in the running. :)

Sent an app to OSU in early december and have STILL not heard back
Give it 4 more weeks at least. Everyone in this chat needs to wait longer.
