proposition

Read a random definition: Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA)

A quick definition of proposition:

A proposition is a request for a decision or order from a court. It can be written or spoken, and there are different types of propositions, such as a motion for reduction or a motion to modify. Some propositions can be made without notifying the other party, while others are likely to be contested. A speaking motion is one that brings up new issues not mentioned before.

A more thorough explanation:

A proposition is a request or proposal made in a formal setting, such as a court or a meeting. It can be either written or oral, and it asks for a specific ruling or order to be made.

  • A lawyer making a proposition to a judge to dismiss a case
  • A member of a board making a proposition to approve a new policy
  • A shareholder making a proposition to change the company's bylaws

These examples illustrate how a proposition is a formal request or proposal made in a specific setting, with the intention of achieving a specific outcome.
