Vassus

In historical feudal law, a vassus referred to a high-ranking noble or lord who held land and authority directly from the king. This individual had a direct, personal allegiance and obligation to the monarch, rather than owing loyalty to an intermediate lord. They were essentially the king's immediate tenants in the feudal hierarchy, receiving their fiefs (grants of land) and responsibilities directly from the crown.

  Imagine a powerful Duke, granted a vast duchy by the King himself, with the explicit duty to raise and command a significant portion of the royal army during wartime. This Duke would be considered a vassus because his land, title, and military obligations were owed directly to the King, without any other lord standing between them.
