A war zone refers to a specific geographical area, either on land or at sea, that has been formally designated or recognized by nations involved in a conflict as an active area of warfare. Within a war zone, the usual protections and rights afforded under international law to countries that are not participating in the conflict (known as neutral nations) may be disregarded or significantly curtailed by the warring parties. This means that neutral ships, aircraft, or even citizens might face restrictions, inspections, or risks that would not typically apply outside of such a declared zone.

Here are some examples illustrating the concept of a war zone:

• Naval Blockade: During a conflict, Country X declares a large section of international waters surrounding the ports of its enemy, Country Y, as a "war zone." Country X issues warnings that any vessel attempting to enter this area will be subject to search, seizure, or even attack, regardless of its flag. A neutral commercial ship, registered in Country Z and carrying non-military goods to a third neutral nation, attempts to pass through this declared zone.
