Club-law describes a situation where disputes are resolved, or order is enforced, through the use of physical force, violence, or intimidation, rather than through established legal processes, rules, or legitimate authority.

It signifies a breakdown of the rule of law, where raw power and coercion replace due process, fairness, and legal principles.

• Example 1: Vigilante Justice

  After a series of unsolved thefts in a rural community, a group of frustrated residents decides to take matters into their own hands. They apprehend a suspected individual, physically restrain him, and interrogate him using threats and intimidation to extract a confession, rather than reporting their suspicions to the police or allowing the legal system to investigate and prosecute. They then impose their own "punishment" by publicly shaming him and forcing him to leave town.

  This illustrates club-law because the residents bypassed the official legal framework (police investigation, court proceedings, due process) and instead used illegal physical force and intimidation to impose their own form of "justice."

• Example 2: Political Suppression by Force

  In a country experiencing significant political unrest, the ruling party deploys unofficial armed groups, often referred to as "paramilitaries," to violently disperse peaceful opposition rallies. These groups assault protesters, destroy their banners, and use threats to intimidate them into silence, all without any legal warrants, arrests, or adherence to the country's constitutional rights regarding assembly and free speech.

  This demonstrates club-law as the government is using unauthorized and illegal force to suppress political dissent, effectively replacing the rule of law and citizens' legal rights with brute power and violence.
