Entitle

To entitle someone means to grant them a legal right to something, or to qualify them to receive a specific benefit or privilege according to established rules, laws, or agreements.

Here are some examples:

• An employment contract might state that an employee is entitled to three weeks of paid vacation annually. This means the contract legally grants the employee the right to take that time off while continuing to receive their salary.

• Under consumer protection laws, if a product is found to be defective within a specified warranty period, the buyer is often entitled to a full refund or a replacement. The law qualifies the buyer for this remedy.

• When a person passes away, their last will and testament can specify that a particular beneficiary is entitled to inherit a certain portion of their estate. The will legally confers upon that individual the right to claim those assets.
