Simple English definitions for legal terms

rem

Read a random definition: socida

A quick definition of rem:

REM: A legal term that means "against a thing". It is used to determine the status of something and the rights of people related to that thing. It is different from in personam, which is about the rights of specific people. An action in rem is when a court decides who owns something and what rights they have, not just between themselves but also against anyone else who might deal with that thing. Quasi in rem is similar, but it's about the rights of a person who has an interest in property located within the court's jurisdiction.

A more thorough explanation:

Definition: REM stands for "in rem," which is a Latin term meaning "against a thing." It refers to legal actions that involve determining the status of a thing, such as property, and the rights of people in relation to that thing.

Examples:

  • An action in rem could be a court case to determine who owns a piece of land.
  • Quasi in rem refers to legal actions that involve determining the rights of a person who has an interest in property located within the court's jurisdiction. For example, a court case to determine the rights of a person who has a lien on a car that is being sold.

These examples illustrate how in rem legal actions involve determining the rights and ownership of property, and how quasi in rem actions involve determining the rights of people with an interest in property.

No, at least from the two people I know there that’s false. I think it’s just something like Chicago for conservatives is on par with S whereas for liberals it’s below HYS but above CCNP

I mean I think even the student body there only like 15 percent is part of fedsoc
It's more just not a good # for people who aren't willing to clerk conservative. I'm sure they place liberal clerks at an above average rate for a t-6 though. Maybe higher (not entirely sure)

@texaslawhopefully: it's pretty funny how even in law journal articles people can't stop confusing Penn with Penn State
